Kestrels
Kestrel Class
Kestrel Class comprises of Year 6 pupils in a morning and Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils in an afternoon. The children make excellent progress under the guidance of Mrs Olley, supported by Mrs Pattinson and Mrs Maycock.
Activities are planned so that the children enjoy a rich and diverse curriculum with a vast range of activities which are carefully tailored to children's needs and interests. Reading, Writing and Mathematics are given high priority, and children achieve well above the national average by the time they leave Year 6, with a high proportion of children achieving expected or above in all subjects.
P.E. lessons will take place on a Monday morning. Please ensure the children have their P.E. kit and trainers on those days, ensuring all clothing items are clearly named. The children will engage in a range of activities throughout the year including invasion games, athletics, gymnastics and dance. Year 4, 5 and 6 will be going swimming on a Friday morning.
We have worship every day. This is led by Mrs Hutchins, Reverend Gary, staff from school or sometimes our worship team. This is a lovely time for us all to sing, pray, learn about our Christian values, local and global events and to share ideas and have time to reflect. Sometimes worship is in the hall with the whole school or sometimes it is in our class groups. We say a prayer at lunch time and at the end of the school day.
We love reading at Cockerham School. We cannot emphasise enough the importance of sharing books together. The children will bring a reading book home. The expectation is to read at least 3 times a week in order to develop their fluency and comprehension skills. Maths and English homework is sent home every Friday. This should be returned by the following Friday. Spellings will also be given out and tested every Friday.
If you have any concerns or questions throughout the year, please feel free to contact me.

Extra Homework Activities
Autumn Term Learning 2023-24
Year 5 and 6 have been learning about Rivers and Canals in their Geography this half Term. We have been learning about how canals were built over 200 years ago and why they were built. Here are some pictures of us making our own canals in groups.
This week we had a visit from the NHS who taught us all about the different job roles and responsibilities of the NHS. We took part in lots of different activities.
This Week we took part in First Aid training. We learned how to put people in the recovery position, how to help someone who may be choking and we even learned how to do CPR correctly.
Welly Walk
We went on a class welly walk to Church looking at the nature and describing what we could see around us. We then wrote poetry and created our own water colour paintings of our walk, which we displayed outside our classroom.
Science
In Science, we have been learning about how blood travels around our bodies. We then created explanation texts to show our understanding. We looked at how our hearts work and how to keep our bodies healthy. In groups we presented a 'Health Road Show' presentation.
